Robins Defeat Swifts

Ronald Crane • Aug 15, 2022

13th August 2022 - Knowle FC 2-0 Bolehall Swifts

Ronald Crane reports from the Draintech Community Ground

This was an absorbing game of football, with everyone on the park giving of their best: With little to chose between The Robins and The Swifts, apart – of course – from the two goals. They were scores of the highest calibre.

The first came just past the half hour mark when a really good run on the Robins’ left resulted in a wonderful centre, HAMZA SIDDIQUE’S trap, turn and shot was too good for the Swifts defence. It was a goal that would grace any match.  Up to that point, there had been little to chose between the two sides. Swifts are much altered from last term and will take points from many sides in this season’s Division Two. They work hard, off and on the ball, and are swift (no pun intended) of foot.

For most of this match defences and the mid-field were dominant. Swifts did not have many chances in front of goal, but when they did, Robins’ custodian Ben Maxwell was up to the challenge. He was ably assisted by his defence and on one occasion, the hard-working Christian McArdle was on hand to clear the ball from the goal-line.  At the other end, it was the Robins who had the most chances, thwarted by an efficient defence, and – it has to be said – some wayward shooting.  The temperature was up in the low thirties, and Referee Carroll was generous with much needed water breaks.

As the second half proceeded towards the ninety minutes, one was left wondering how Jack Mullens did not score. He and Reece Hewitt were a real thorns in the Swifts’ defence. The Robins’ back men had their work cut out too, with Jordan Lewis a real handful.  Towards the close this match became very tight indeed, but the result was secured when Lewis Miller was adjudged to have committed a foul some nineteen yards out and just right of centre. Up stepped OWEN WARD. His kick was superb. There are few Goalkeepers who would have stopped it. The hapless Miller was immediately substituted.

The Swifts did not concede defeat and pressed forward with intent. Omatay tried his luck from distance, and the Robins’ bench responded by withdrawing Jack Mullins in favour of the defensive qualities of Ash Weeks. Knowle saw out the match and managed the final minutes well.
