Andy Lavelle

Knowle FC was saddened recently, to hear that Andy Lavelle (coach with Knowle GU15 Kestrels) had lost his short and ultimately overwhelming battle with cancer.  We would like to convey our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to Andy's family at this difficult time. We ask that all our Knowle teams - juniors and adults - stand together this weekend in observing one minute's silence

before they kick off. We do this to remember Andy, to honour his contribution to the club, to football and his country and out of respect for his family who have suffered such a cruel and tragic loss.

Andrew “Andy” Lavelle was a man of strength, loyalty, and deep integrity. Serving 27 years in the Royal Marines Commando, he lived the Green Beret ethos every day — courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to those around him. His service reflected discipline, honour, and the quiet determination that defined his character.

Andy was a volunteer coach with his daughter’s Knowle GU15 Kestrels side and the club is hugely appreciative of his significant contribution and commitment to that team. Andy was well-liked and respected throughout the club and will be sorely missed by all who knew him at Knowle, particularly the players and the other coaches with Kestrels, Anna and Mark.

Andy was an exceptional athlete. He completed the Ironman, multiple triathlons, and the London Marathon, pushing himself with the same drive and endurance he carried in uniform. His achievements showed grit, strength, and an absolute refusal to ever

give up. Football was one of the greatest joys of Andy’s life. He loved the game deeply — playing, supporting, and being part of the football community. He also loved coaching and helping teams, giving his time, energy, and encouragement to others. His humour, discipline, and team spirit made him someone other players looked up to and trusted.

At home, Andy was a devoted husband and a great dad. His love for his family was steady, protective, and wholehearted. He taught his children good values — kindness, honesty, hard work, and courage — not just through his words, but through the way he lived his life. His family was his pride, his joy, and the centre of everything he did.

Andy leaves behind a legacy of honour, service, love, and strong values. He lived the Royal Marine motto: Per Mare, Per Terram —

By Sea, By Land. He will be remembered always — for the Marine he was, the athlete he became, and the loving husband and father he remained every day of his life.
